Lazada responds to its counterfeit problem

Lazada is a Southeast Asian online shopping and selling platform with local operations in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and a regional HQ in Singapore. Launched in 2012, it offers a wide range of products in several categories including fashion, beauty, toys, household and consumer electronics.

Akin to several online marketplaces, Lazada does not escape from counterfeits being sold on its platform and the company has acknowledged this issue previously saying, “not only is it striving to become the region’s leading and most trusted place for online shoppers, but for brands and sellers too”. Lazada say they work with brand owners, to confirm authenticity, when it has been alerted to counterfeit and infringing items on its platform. Confirmed counterfeit listings will be removed and the infringing sellers face penalties and being blacklisted.

In 2016 Alibaba Group became a majority owner of the Lazada Group and pledged to fight counterfeits on the Lazada e-commerce site, just as it is attempting to on its other online selling platforms, such as Taobao and AliExpress. Lazada recently announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with South Korean IP regulator, KOIPA, to remove any counterfeit Korean brands that are found on the platform in all the countries in which it operates.
