Alibaba ups its online brand protection game

One of the most common places consumers come across counterfeit products online is on third-party marketplaces such as the websites of internet giants Amazon, E-bay, and Alibaba. In light of this, many companies have begun investing heavily in the online brand protection offered through their services and Alibaba in particular has been very successful of late in dealing with counterfeiters.                                                                                                                                                                                                              
Alibaba recently published a report outlining the company's online brand protection work throughout 2018 and showing a significant improvement in the number of takedowns of counterfeit vendors as well as the rate of suspicious listings on the site overall.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         
The main focus of Alibaba's brand protection efforts has been to remove offenders from the online platform as quickly as possible and in some cases even to carry out proactive takedowns before any transactions could be made.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          
Alibaba cites the increased integration of new technology in the platform's protection strategies along with close collaboration with brand owners and other stakeholders as an important key to the company's success. One of the ways in which this collaboration has taken place has been through the Alibaba Anti-counterfeiting Alliance (AACA), which now has over 120 member brands, and the conferences organised by the AACA. These allow the exchange of knowledge and information regarding developments within the industry between brand owners and other stakeholders, a collaboration which has been key to Alibaba's online brand protection advances.
