A popular scam is to set up a lookalike website to sell counterfeit products at deeply discounted prices. Typical characteristics of fake websites include, using a brand's name in the domain name, using a brand's logo or an adapted version of it or selling counterfeit goods at heavily reduced prices compared to the genuine article.
Telling the difference
According to some estimates, fake websites receive up to 60 million visits per year. These sites typically claim they are selling authentic products at a substantial discount. In fact, they often masquerade as genuine outlets, using well-known trademarks both on their site and on counterfeit products. Over time, these fraudulent sites have become increasingly sophisticated, allowing them to dupe a multitude of consumers. Worryingly, studies have shown that when consumers are presented with a copycat website, 20% think they are on a genuine site.
Detecting counterfeits and infringements
Without access to the ‘zone files’, it is difficult to detect fake website infringements in good time.
